FENTANYL (FEN/FTY)
Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid analgesic, closely resembling morphine but exhibiting a potency that is 50 to 100 times greater.
WHAT Is it?
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid pain medication that is significantly more potent than oxycodone and other opioids. It is a Schedule II controlled substance in the United States and is often illegally produced and sold on the street.
The drug is responsible for a large number of overdose deaths in the US. Fentanyl abuse has been on the rise in the US, according to a press release by the DEA in January 2023, more than 50.6 million fentanyl tablets and more than 10,000 pounds of fentanyl powder had been seized nationwide in the month of December 2022 alone. This amount represents 379 million deadly doses -- enough to kill every American.
how is it ingested?
Fentanyl has been ingested orally, injected, snorted, or smoked. The method of ingestion can affect the speed and intensity of the drug's effects.
HOW IS IT HARMFUL?
Fentanyl is highly addictive and can lead to physical dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms when use is discontinued. Illegally produced fentanyl is often mixed with other drugs, and users may not know the strength or purity of the substance they are consuming, increasing the risk of overdose and death.
A fentanyl overdose can lead to coma, respiratory failure, and death. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in 2021, there were 70,601 overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids, with fentanyl being the most commonly involved drug. According to the DEA, fentanyl is the deadliest drug abused in the US. A very small dose can be lethal.
WHAT DOes it LOOK LIKE?
Fentanyl is available in several forms, including tablets, patches, eye droppers, nasal sprays, and injections. Illegally produced fentanyl is often sold in powder or pill form.
what are its effects?
Fentanyl works by attaching to opioid receptors in the body, which govern pain and emotions. It produces a range of effects, including pain relief, sedation, and euphoria. It can also cause respiratory depression, dizziness, nausea, confusion and death.
