OTC UTI Test Strip Overview

The URS Test Strip is an over-the-counter home-use test for the qualitative detection of leukocytes, or white blood cells, and nitrite in human urine. The two test pads provide information that may help screen for signs of a urinary tract infection. Results are compared with the color chart on the foil pouch at 120 seconds, or 2 minutes. Each kit contains three individually wrapped test strips.

Test Specifications

Testing Item Abbreviation Sensitivity Reportable Range Read Time
Leukocytes LEU 15 cells/µL Negative-500 cells/µL 120 seconds
Nitrite NIT 0.05 mg/dL Negative-Positive 120 seconds
Timing matters: Do not interpret the test before 60 seconds or after 180 seconds. Compare both pads with the pouch color chart at 120 seconds in bright, natural light.

How to Perform the Test

Open one pouch
Remove the strip immediately before use. Keep the foil pouch because its exterior contains the color chart needed to interpret the result.

Wet both test pads
Begin urinating. After 1-2 seconds, hold the strip downward with both pads in the urine stream for 1-2 seconds until they are completely wet.

Remove excess urine
Immediately touch the edge of the strip to an absorbent material, such as a paper towel.

Lay the strip flat
Place it on a flat surface with both test pads facing upward and begin timing.

Compare at two minutes
At 120 seconds, hold the strip close to the foil-pouch color blocks and match each pad with its corresponding chart.

Required but not provided: A timer, clock or watch and an absorbent material such as a paper towel are required. A specimen collection container is required only when the urine is collected rather than tested directly in the stream.

UTI Test Color Chart

UTI test strip color chart for leukocyte and nitrite results
At 2 minutes, compare each test pad separately with its corresponding leukocyte or nitrite color scale. Read the complete instructions before interpreting the result.
Color interpretation: A positive leukocyte pad changes toward purple. A positive nitrite pad shows any degree of uniform pink. The pads should not be described as both turning purple.

Understanding the Results

Leukocytes Nitrite Recommended Next Step
Negative Negative No sign of UTI was detected. If symptoms continue, consult a physician because some UTIs may not be detected by the test.
Trace Negative Test again the following day with a new strip. Consult a physician if symptoms are present or another trace leukocyte result occurs.
Negative or Trace Positive The result suggests a sign of a UTI. Consult a physician promptly.
Positive (+, ++ or +++) Positive The result suggests a sign of a UTI. Consult a physician promptly.
Positive (+, ++ or +++) Negative Repeat the test the next time you urinate using a new strip after washing the genital area. If leukocytes remain positive, consult a physician.

Important Testing Considerations

First-morning urine is preferred
The test may be used at another time, but first-morning urine may contain more bacteria.

Avoid testing during menstruation
The product instructions advise avoiding testing during the menstrual period.

Do not test while taking antibiotics
Antibiotics may affect results. Consult a physician if you are taking medication or have questions about testing.

Use bright, natural light
Colored lighting and color-vision impairment may make the color chart difficult to interpret accurately.

Possible interference: Large amounts of vitamin C may cause false-negative results. High glucose, urine pH, dehydration, antibiotics, urine color, insufficient bladder-hold time and some bacteria or dietary factors may also affect results. Review the package insert for the complete limitations before testing.

Storage and Handling

Store at 15°C-30°C
Store the sealed strips in a dry place at 59°F-86°F.

Do not refrigerate
Keep the test away from direct sunlight and do not refrigerate it.

Keep sealed until use
Leave each strip inside its foil pouch with the drying packet until immediately before testing.

Single use only
Do not use an expired strip, a damaged pouch or a strip with discolored test pads.

Instructions and Product Documents

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this UTI test check?

Each strip qualitatively checks human urine for leukocytes and nitrite. These results may help screen for signs associated with a urinary tract infection.

Is this UTI test available over the counter?

Yes. The product-specific instructions identify the test for over-the-counter home use.

When should the result be read?

Compare both pads with the pouch color chart at 120 seconds, or 2 minutes. Do not interpret the result before 60 seconds or after 180 seconds.

Do both test pads turn purple?

No. Interpret the two pads separately. A positive leukocyte pad changes toward purple, while any degree of uniform pink on the nitrite pad is considered positive.

Does a negative result rule out a UTI?

No. Some UTIs may not be detected by the test. If symptoms continue despite a negative result, consult a physician or healthcare professional.

Can the test be used while taking antibiotics?

The package insert says not to use the test strips while taking antibiotics. Consult a physician about symptoms or the appropriate time to test.

Is first-morning urine required?

No, but first-morning urine is preferred because it may contain more bacteria. The insert also advises avoiding testing during menstruation.

Can this strip test blood?

No. It is intended only for testing human urine.

How many tests are included and what is the minimum order?

Each kit contains three test strips. The minimum order is 10 kits, which equals 30 tests total.

DrugTestKitUSA Payments built in partnership with Stripe

Security at Stripe: Learn how Stripe handles security.

A PCI-certified auditor has audited Stripe. We’re a certified PCI Service Provider Level 1. This is the most stringent level of certification available in the payments industry. To accomplish this, we use the best-in-class security tools and practices to maintain a high level of security at Stripe.

HTTPS and HSTS for secure connections

Stripe forces HTTPS for all services using TLS (SSL), including our public website and the Dashboard to ensure secure connections:

  • Stripe.js is served only over TLS.
  • Stripe’s official libraries connect to Stripe’s servers over TLS and verify TLS certificates on each connection.

We regularly audit the details of our implementation, including the certificates we serve, the certificate authorities we use, and the ciphers we support. We use HSTS to ensure that browsers interact with Stripe only over HTTPS. Stripe is also on the HSTS preloaded lists for both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

Sensitive data and communication encryption

All card numbers are encrypted at rest with AES-256. Decryption keys are stored on separate machines. None of Stripe’s internal servers and daemons can obtain plain text card numbers but can request that cards are sent to a service provider on a static allowlist. Stripe’s infrastructure for storing, decrypting, and transmitting card numbers runs in a separate hosting environment, and doesn’t share any credentials with Stripe’s primary services including our API and website.
